Synopsis: The movie is loosely based on the Marathi Movie “Mala Aai Vhhaychy”The movie highlights the controversial topic of surrogacy in India which is still seen as taboo. The story begins with a young girl called Mimi(Kriti Sanon) who wants to make it big in Bollywood. Her dreams seem larger than life as she belongs to a small village in Rajasthan. She is trying to raise funds to supplement her dreams. Her friend Shama(Sae Tamankar) supports her in all her endeavors and plays a very pivotal role throughout the movie. All seems hunky-dory until Mimi meets an American couple through a driver Bhanu(Pankaj Tripathi) who is looking for a young and healthy surrogate to bear their child. After a lot of cajoling Mimi agrees to bear their child for a sum of 20 lakhs which obviously is provided to her periodically.
She keeps visiting the hospital for her routine tests and examinations. All hell breaks loose after the anti-natal scan where the parents and Mimi are informed that the unborn might have abnormalities due to down syndrome. Everybody is distraught upon hearing the news and the American couple(Peter and Summer) flees to the US. Mimi is completely shattered and broken and runs across the town to confront Peter and Summer but all in vain.
Everybody in the village gets to knows that Mimi is pregnant raising a lot of brows. What follows is a web of lies to conceal the truth. Finally, the child is born and to everybody’s utter surprise is perfectly normal. So the family starts rejoicing and accepting the newborn.
Pankaj Tripathi yet again pleases us with his timely sense of humor and manages to handle the most tricky situations almost effortlessly.
A few years pass by and the child(Raj) is 4 years old. Suddenly the biological parents of Raj appear from nowhere and are very determined to gain custody of their child. But Mimi is completely aghast
and will not budge at anything. Ultimately Peter and Summer take the legal way out. Mimi seems very helpless as Raj begins to bond with his biological mother and is willing to hand over the child to them.
In the last scene, we see Peter and summer walking down a building with a girl in Peter’s lap. It is revealed that they in fact realized their folly and decided to adopt a child instead. The movie ends on a happy note.
Verdict
Tackles a very relevant social issue and the stigma of being an unmarried mother. Great acting by all the actors. Kriti Sanon is quite convincing in the role of a mother.
